Birth Rites Collection Summer School is a unique 5-day programme of lectures, workshops and exchange. It is generated through engaging directly with the artworks in the collection which are installed across the historic Guy’s campus, King’s College London, and hosted by the Department of Midwifery.
If you are a midwife, academic, artist, medic, health professional, art historian or policy advisor, you will arrive on the course with your skill set and leave with a bespoke multi-media pack of visual, textual, auditory and filmic material, to be used thereafter in your own future work.
The course will be led by Helen Knowles, BRC Curator and media artist and Hermione Wiltshire, artist and Senior Lecturer in Photography Programme at the Royal College of Art. We will facilitate you to curate your own responses to the artworks in the collection, using a variety of media and exploring themes which include:
-How the collection informs and unpacks attitudes in midwifery, medicine and education and it’s potential to change practice and policy.
-It's impact on the feminist contemporary art canon and the rehabilitation of the visual discourse of the birth aesthetic into art history.
-Censorship of works on birth, institutional responses, ethics and the law.
-Artistic and midwifery practices that address reproduction in the digital age, AI, simulation and the non-binary.
Special guest speakers will bring diverse perspectives and stimulate in-depth discussions. Workshops will include the chance to shoot short films on everyday devices, create a podcast/ sound work and reflect on the themes through visual and written responses which will then be edited into an imaginative PowerPoint.
The Birth Rites Collection Summer School course will be run Monday 15th to Friday 19th of July 2019 from 10:00 to 17:00/18:00. The days will be divided into a morning and afternoon session and the course will be a carefully curated combination of talks and workshops that progress thematically through the course material.
A full schedule for the course, including an official list of speakers, will be available by 15th May.
